ELSA CARENBAUER
As an interdisciplinary artist with a background in
communication design, I see design as an integral part of how I express
myself. Through my art, I explore human connection, identity, and
heritage from the lens of my experience as a bi-racial Asian American.
The bi-racial experience is often complex, shaped by layered histories
and aspirations, but too often it’s reduced to being “other.” My work
gives me a way to engage with the parts of my identity that sometimes
feel hidden or hard to articulate.
I ask questions through my art: Who is responsible for preserving
cultural traditions? Who is allowed to claim or tell these stories? Where
do we find our place in rewriting or reshaping narratives that have
existed for generations? My hope is that my work opens space for
dialogue about belonging, memory, and the stories we choose to carry
forward.
